InstantUpgrade: Automatic upgrades for WordPress
Alex Günsche · March 11, 2007
InstantUpgrade is a plugin for WordPress, which will perform automatic upgrades of a WordPress installation with a single click. You can upgrade to the latest WordPress version, or you can upgrade to a version of your choice. The plugin downloads the chosen WordPress version, unpacks it, deletes the old files and inserts the new ones. All these actions don’t require funky PHP extensions — they are all handled by the InstantUpgrade plugin.
This plugin might be of special interest for you if you installed WordPress for a friend or a customer with no knowledge of FTP, PHP and MySQL. But of course, everybody else will surely also apprechiate easy and instant upgrades.
Documentation, screenshots and downloads are available at the InstantUpgrade homepage. Feedback is very apprechiated.

Auf jeden Fall eine sehr interessante Idee. Werde ich mir mal anschauen.

What a great idea! This will make me feel less nervous at upgrade time!
Thank you.

Finally, someone wrote this plugin!
By the way, “appreciate” is the proper spelling.
Britgirl on March 14, 2007 at 01:38 #
Wonderful idea! This should be very popular!

Hmm, I’ll have to test this plugin out myself to see if it’s something I’ll recommend. This would definitely be a perfect plugin for some of my clients since they’re too nervous to update wordpress on their own. =)

)
3. Berücksichtigt das Plugin auch die Sprachversionen?
Besten Dank für angemessene Auskunst. Ich werde es sehr zu schätzen wissen.
Alex Günsche on March 15, 2007 at 10:11 #
bhlogiston on March 15, 2007 at 10:39 #
Heute nachmittag ist dann also definitiv WP-time.

Alex Günsche on March 15, 2007 at 15:56 #

Heaven Sent……
And now for something a little more positive…
I’ve needed to upgrade my WordPress install for quite some time, but I’ve always procrastinated at the crucial moment - the idea of losing data or simply having the site down for an extend…
New York Pundit on March 16, 2007 at 05:34 #
My God It Worked!
I backed everything including the dust and the spiderwebs
on the bathroom floor of the building that hosts the server,
then shed a tear because I knew that I had to be that .01%
that would cause the apocolypse to happen, clicked the button,
and low and behold it worked like a charm!!!!
You my friend are a person that I will never forget, thank
You for this plugin, I would never have upgraded without it!

Ein sehr praktisches, cooles plugin…danke!

Sounds like one of the must have plugins for any wordpress user. But I have one question. Please pardon me if it is too naive. Suppose I upgrade using the plugin, then I should go back to all the files where I made any changes - like inserting ads, inserting other plugin scripts or in short every thing that I changed to get my site to look as it looks now… Right? If somebody would answer that it would be great. I want to use this plugin but don’t want o lose all the changes that I made to my files.
Alex Günsche on March 21, 2007 at 08:33 #
If you have changed the files in
wp-admin/orwp-includes/, they would be lost indeed. It is definitely no good idea to edit these files, because virtually everything in WordPress can be solved with plugins. However, I consider making available a opportunity to preserve such files in on of the next releases, even though I strongly discourage this.colbert on April 2, 2007 at 01:38 #
cool plugin but do we still need to disable all the WP plugins b4 we do an upgrade?
okg on April 6, 2007 at 13:26 #
Moin Alex,
Vitaly Kolesnik on April 6, 2007 at 15:41 #
Hello Alex,
Will this plugin work with wp mu?
Thank you
Alex Günsche on April 6, 2007 at 18:05 #
Vitaly, no this plugin does unfortunately not work with WPµ. But I guess it should be not too hard to adapt it. If you want, you can take the source (it’s GPLed) and build a µ version from it.

Gruss

I did not know there is an instant upgrade for wordpress. I am currently using version 2.2. I did not know how to install wordpress also because there is a one click installation service provided by my hosting. Your post will definitely help me to upgrade to a newer version since wordpress keep coming out new version every 6 months.
Thank you.

Can you please help, I am in desperate need.
I tried installing your plugin and lost my entire site (www.saltypaws.co.uk).
I followed your directions with doing a backup with your other plugin, then uploads and changing permissions, when I clicked on the update button I got the error messages of permissions fails, BUT the major problem is my wp-contents and wp-adin folders completely dissappeared, do you have any idea what happened? Any idea how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Desperately,
Margaret

(continued from the above comment)
Sorry not my wp-contents but my wp-admin and wp-includes folder.
I tried uploading new folders but now I get the following error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: stripos() in C:\Inetpub\vhosts\saltypaws.co.uk\httpdocs\wp-includes\query.php on line 37
Any idea?
Alex Günsche on January 9, 2008 at 09:55 #
I don’t know *what* you’ve uploaded, but WordPress doesn’t use the function
stripos(). The error has nothing to do with InstantUpgrade, it rather says that you’re using a function which is not available in your PHP version.Joachim on February 15, 2008 at 21:53 #
